So, I had an interesting experience today. I listen to a lot of podcasts, including one about home recording called the Project Studio Network. A couple of months ago, they started a contest called “A Mix to Dye For” where you’d submit your mixes to the engineer Chares Dye (who did Ricky Martin’s Livin’ La Vida Loca, and has mixed Shakira, Gloria Estefan, Sammy Hagar, Julio Eglasias, Aerosmith, etc. and a whole bunch of other really big artists) all to win a copy of his DVD training course “Mix It Like A Record.” Basically, they said that the prize wouldn’t go to the person with the best mix, but to the people who they thought would benefit the most from the training course.
So, I’m listening this morning, having heard nothing from anyone, and they start talking about the top three “losers.” The losers were the people whose mixes were too good to qualify for the DVD. To my complete and utter shock, I was one of the losers! I submitted my song Earthstar that I produced back in December, and it was one of the top three mixes that they got during the contest. Color me surprised. Charles and the hosts of the show said some very complimentary things about my mixing on the song.
Anyway, if you want to hear it, you can find the podcast at http://www.projectstudionetwork.com/. It’s the most recent show (56), and my song is about 32 minutes into the show.
